Tunnel RF Instrumentation Engineer

The Boring Company was founded to solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic by creating an underground network of tunnels. Today, we are creating the technology to increase tunneling speed and decrease costs by a factor of 10 or more with the ultimate goal of making Hyperloop adoption viable and enabling rapid transit across densely populated regions.
This role will own the design and development of RF systems for our tunnel boring machines and supporting equipment. Key applications include underground utility detection, geotechnical remote sensing, and localization of underground structures and vehicles. You will work directly with manufacturing, mechanical, controls, and field teams to design RF systems that are practical to build, operate, troubleshoot, and continuously improve.
Responsibilities
- Own the electrical and software design of RF and wave-physics systems for tunnel boring machines, including radar, sonar, seismic, magnetic, and other advanced imaging and detection systems
- Perform first-principles analysis and physics simulations to drive component selection and overall system feasibility to the desired performance
- Develop and execute test campaigns in the lab and the field to de-risk and qualify designs for production
- Drive rapid iteration and deployment in a vertically integrated team, turning concepts into operational hardware-software solutions
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Software, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- Experience designing RF systems, preferably in the context of radar/tracking systems or underground applications in the VLF/ULF domain
- Strong understanding of antenna design, amplifiers, SNR budget, timing and synchronization, attenuation, and other concepts related to RF systems in localization, navigation, or GNSS contexts
- Experience with hardware-software integration in autonomous systems, robotics, or other sensor-driven vehicles
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Prior experience operating in rugged environments or in construction, industrial settings or similar
