About the Role

The Traveling Field Project Engineer is an early-career construction professional who works where the building happens—on active project sites alongside Superintendents, Project Managers, trade partners, and project stakeholders. This role supports the field execution of RNGD’s Building projects while developing the technical knowledge, field leadership, and operational judgment required to grow into increasing levels of responsibility within construction operations.

As a Traveling Field Project Engineer, you will help translate plans and specifications into coordinated field execution. You will support short-term planning, quality control, trade coordination, document management, material tracking, project controls, and closeout while gaining hands-on exposure to the full construction lifecycle.

This is not a desk-based engineering role. You will spend significant time in the field, learning how complex projects come together, identifying issues before they impact the work, and helping project teams maintain momentum from mobilization through turnover. Because RNGD deploys talent where our projects and clients need us most, this position requires regular travel and temporary assignment to project locations across RNGD’s operating footprint.

Core Responsibilities

• Field Execution & Project Coordination
  • Work alongside the Superintendent and project leadership team to support safe, efficient, and high-quality field execution from mobilization through project closeout.
  • Assist with daily and short-term construction planning, including coordination of trade activities, sequencing, site logistics, manpower, materials, equipment, and upcoming work.
  • Maintain a strong field presence to understand current conditions, verify progress, identify potential constraints, and help resolve issues before they affect schedule, quality, or productivity.
  • Support coordination between field operations, project management, design partners, trade partners, vendors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Assist with interpreting construction drawings, specifications, details, and other contract documents to support accurate field execution.
  • Participate in project meetings, site walks, inspections, and coordination activities as assigned.

• Schedule, Production & Project Controls
  • Support the Superintendent and Project Manager in developing, updating, and maintaining project schedules, look-ahead plans, and trade-specific work plans.
  • Track field progress against planned activities and help identify schedule constraints, procurement concerns, sequencing conflicts, and other potential impacts.
  • Monitor critical material, equipment, and long-lead-item deliveries to support continuity of field operations.
  • Assist with quantity tracking, scope take-offs, production reporting, and other project controls used to evaluate progress and performance.
  • Maintain accurate field documentation and communicate emerging risks or discrepancies to project leadership.

• Trade Partner & Technical Coordination
  • Build productive working relationships with trade partners and support day-to-day coordination of assigned scopes of work.
  • Assist with subcontractor scope review, purchasing activities, take-offs, pricing, and change management as assigned.
  • Coordinate submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, field questions, and other technical documentation required to keep work progressing.
  • Review submittals and field installations against project drawings, specifications, approved documents, and quality expectations.
  • Help identify conflicts between drawings, specifications, existing conditions, and field installation requirements and elevate issues for timely resolution.
  • Support coordination of inspections, testing, punch activities, and corrective work.

• Quality, Safety & Jobsite Readiness
  • Reinforce RNGD’s commitment to executing work safely and to a high standard of quality on every project.
  • Participate in preparatory meetings, quality reviews, inspections, and field verification activities.
  • Assist in confirming that work is installed in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, submittals, and project requirements.
  • Identify incomplete, nonconforming, or potentially deficient work and partner with field leadership and trade partners to drive timely resolution.
  • Maintain awareness of site conditions, logistics, housekeeping, access, and other factors that influence safe and productive field operations.
  • Model personal accountability and a proactive, team-first approach to jobsite safety and quality.

• Project Documentation & Closeout
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and current project records using RNGD’s construction management systems and processes.
  • Support management of RFIs, submittals, drawings, specifications, meeting documentation, field reports, and other project records.
  • Assist with tracking project changes and preparing supporting documentation for change events and change orders.
  • Support punch-list management, commissioning and turnover activities, and final project closeout.
  • Assist with assembling O&M manuals, warranties, as-built documentation, owner training materials, and other turnover requirements.
  • Support final subcontractor documentation and payment processes as assigned.

• Leadership Development & Continuous Improvement
  • Take ownership of assigned responsibilities and progressively expand technical and field leadership capabilities.
  • Learn directly from Superintendents, Project Managers, trade partners, and other experienced builders while actively seeking feedback and development opportunities.
  • Participate in RNGD training and development programs and apply lessons learned to field execution.
  • Share observations, lessons learned, and improvement opportunities that can strengthen project delivery across the organization.
  • Demonstrate curiosity about how work is built—not simply how it is documented—and develop a working knowledge of multiple construction trades and systems.
  • Contribute to a jobsite culture built around collaboration, accountability, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Ability and willingness to travel extensively and accept temporary project assignments based on business and project needs.
• Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant construction experience will also be considered.
• 1–3 years of construction experience preferred, including internships, co-ops, field engineering, project engineering, assistant superintendent, or comparable project-based experience.
• Foundational understanding of commercial building construction, construction sequencing, drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and technical information.
• Strong interest in field operations and a desire to develop toward increasing levels of construction leadership responsibility.
• Working knowledge of scheduling, project controls, subcontractor coordination, RFIs, submittals, and change management preferred.
• Experience with construction technology and project management platforms; working knowledge of Primavera P6 or similar scheduling software is preferred.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn RNGD’s construction technology platforms.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with craft professionals, trade partners, project leadership, designers, owners, and internal teams.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving project environment.
• Resourceful problem-solver who takes initiative, follows through on commitments, and knows when to escalate issues.
• Willingness and ability to work primarily in an active construction environment, including exposure to changing weather and jobsite conditions.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet project-specific site access requirements.
