Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. Staff Software Engineer
Redwood Materials runs North America's largest battery recycling operation on Redwood OS, our internal software platform. Redwood OS owns warehouse management and manufacturing, the operations and maintenance that keep them running, and integrates with Microsoft Dynamics 365 as our ERP. It is the system of record for a $3B+ business, and we will be building on it for years. We are hiring a Staff Software Engineer to own a domain of that platform end to end: shaping what gets built with the business, designing it, shipping it, and running it in production. This is a permanent product area, not a project. Interview Process:

Responsibilities:
- Own a domain of Redwood OS end to end: shape the problem with the business, design it, ship it, and operate it in production.
- Turn ambiguous business asks into clear specifications that engineers and AI agents can execute without further interpretation.
- Make tradeoff-aware design decisions across service boundaries, data models, APIs, integrations, observability, and access control.
- Set the bar in code review: use AI effectively by decomposing work for agents, setting guardrails, verifying output at volume, and staying accountable for everything you ship.
- Keep the platform coherent as multiple engineers and agents change it in parallel.
- Debug and resolve production issues, and improve the reliability of the systems you own.
- Raise the output of everyone around you through documentation, conventions, tooling, and mentoring.
- Work directly with stakeholders on-site 3 days/week: floor walks, operator observation, pairing sessions, and demos.
Qualifications:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership of a significant system or domain.
- A track record of owning a problem space end to end with minimal direction.
- Strong Python and production React; experience building and operating applications on AWS.
- Depth in system design: API design, integration patterns, data modeling, and service boundaries.
- Clear, concise technical writing - specifications, design documents, and pull requests that stand on their own.
- Sophisticated use of AI coding agents, paired with full ownership of the result: you can explain every significant decision in the work you ship.
- Judgment to size effort to business value rather than to engineering interest.
- Comfort working alongside warehouse and manufacturing operators on the floor, not only at a desk
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a tech lead or engineering manager, or otherwise accountable for the output of a team.
- Direct experience with ERP, WMS, MES, supply chain, or procurement systems.
- Manufacturing, logistics, or recycling industry experience.
- Integration experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations.
- Experience operating systems that a physical operation depends on around the clock.
In accordance with California pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is listed below. Actual compensation may vary based on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and skills.
The position is full-time. Compensation will be commensurate with experience.
