Senior Software Engineer - UniFi Protect

Join forces with us on our mission to build a better IT industry. We are currently looking for a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer to our team in Stockholm, Sweden.

Please note that applicants must live in Sweden and hold a valid work permit at the time of application to be considered for this role.

Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and own reliable C++ services for real-time video ingest, recording, playback, transcoding, and media management
• Build efficient data paths that perform predictably under high camera counts and constrained CPU, memory, network, and storage resources
• Improve recording integrity, storage lifecycle and retention, fault recovery, and service observability
• Diagnose complex production issues using logs, metrics, crash dumps, support bundles, source-level debugging, and targeted reproduction
• Deliver maintainable changes through design and code reviews, GoogleTest unit tests, pytest integration tests, performance measurements, and deployment validation
• Collaborate with application, camera, platform, cloud, QA, support, and product teams to take features and fixes from design to production

Requirements:

• 5+ years of professional experience developing systems software in modern C++ (C++17/20) on Linux
• Strong grasp of modern C++, including RAII, move semantics, templates, and object-oriented design
• Strong understanding of concurrency, asynchronous I/O, process and thread lifecycle, memory ownership, and failure handling
• Practical knowledge of Linux networking, filesystems, storage I/O, and system-level debugging
• Experience with IPC or RPC frameworks such as gRPC and Protocol Buffers in a multi-service architecture
• Experience designing or maintaining long-running services where performance, reliability, backward compatibility, and data integrity matter
• Ability to investigate ambiguous cross-component failures, form evidence-based hypotheses, and validate fixes with focused reproductions
• Proficiency with Git, CMake or comparable build systems, debuggers, profilers, and scripting
• B.Sc. in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience
• Professional proficiency in written and spoken English

Nice to have:

• Experience with video pipelines, media containers, and tools such as GStreamer or FFmpeg
• Familiarity with video codecs such as H.264, H.265, AV1, VP8, or VP9 and streaming protocols such as RTMP, RTSP, HLS, or WebRTC
• Experience with high-throughput recording, playback, retention, indexing, or storage-recycling systems
• Experience designing high-throughput, low-latency, zero-copy or low-allocation data paths
• Experience with Linux filesystems such as Btrfs and ext4, including performance analysis, capacity management, failure modes, and recovery
• Familiarity with ARM64 Linux appliances, cross-compilation, Debian packaging, and systemd
• Knowledge of SQL databases, query performance, and the interaction between metadata and media storage
• Experience with crash handling, symbolication, observability, performance profiling, and production incident analysis
• Familiarity with fault injection, integration testing, load testing, and performance or capacity analysis
