Senior Manager, Software Development Engineering

This role leads the technical direction and execution of engineering teams responsible for critical tenant-placement experiences within a large-scale rental platform.
You’ll shape the strategy and roadmap for systems that support rental applications, screening, leasing, and move-in workflows.
The position combines hands-on technical leadership with people management, organizational development, and cross-functional partnership.
You’ll guide teams building secure, reliable, high-volume applications in a modern cloud environment.
Success will depend on balancing near-term product delivery with long-term platform health, scalability, and operational excellence.
You’ll also influence engineering practices, metrics, architecture, and collaboration across multiple teams and technical domains.

• Define and drive the technical strategy, architecture direction, and roadmap for one or more software engineering teams, ensuring alignment with product and broader business objectives.

• Lead the design, development, deployment, and operation of scalable, secure, reliable, and high-performing software systems.

• Establish engineering standards for code quality, testing, observability, performance, reliability, and operational excellence.

• Manage, coach, and develop engineering managers and senior engineers while building an inclusive, accountable, and high-performing team culture.

• Partner closely with Product Management, Technical Program Management, and other stakeholders to prioritize initiatives, evaluate trade-offs, and balance immediate delivery with long-term technical health.

• Establish and monitor engineering metrics such as reliability, throughput, quality, and operational performance to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

• Coordinate cross-team initiatives, manage dependencies, resolve technical and organizational risks, and help deliver cohesive end-to-end solutions across services and domains.

• Champion modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automation, cloud-native architectures, and tools that improve developer productivity and system reliability.

• Support the continued growth of engineering capabilities by fostering learning, accountability, collaboration, and effective technical decision-making.

• Contribute to software products and workflows that help landlords manage tenant placement, including rental applications, screening, leasing, and move-in experiences.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including at least 3 years in people leadership roles such as Engineering Manager or Senior Engineering Manager.

• Proven experience leading teams that build, deploy, and operate production software at scale.

• Demonstrated experience delivering and scaling high-availability, high-volume applications or platforms within modern cloud environments.

• Strong understanding of software architecture, system reliability, security, scalability, observability, testing, and performance engineering.

• Experience developing engineering managers and senior technical talent while building diverse, inclusive, and high-performing teams.

• Strong product and business orientation, with experience partnering with product and cross-functional leaders to define roadmaps, prioritize investments, and deliver customer-focused capabilities.

• Ability to make data-informed technical and organizational decisions while balancing short-term execution with long-term platform strategy.

• Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder-management skills, with the ability to influence across teams and coordinate complex initiatives.

• Experience with modern software development practices, including continuous integration and deployment, automation, and cloud-native engineering approaches.

• Base salary range of $206,700–$330,300 annually in California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Washington State, and Washington, DC.

• Base salary range of $196,400–$313,800 annually in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia.
