Job Description Summary

As VHC continues to grow, we are looking to invite a Registered Nurse to join our Medical Oncology & General Medical Unit! This unit is an all private 21 bed, adult oncology/hematology unit providing nursing care for oncology/hematology, palliative care, and general medical surgical patients on a 24 hours per day basis, 7 days per week. The mission of Virginia Hospital Center is to be the best Hospital. VHC nurses and supportive staff are aligned with this goal with specialty focus on the prevention, treatment and cure of cancer using state-of-the-art technology and clinical expertise in an environment dedicated to compassionate care, and improving the quality of life of our patients.

The unit’s mission and goal is to provide quality nursing care to the adult and geriatric oncology/hematology patient. The primary purpose of care is to optimize physical, psychosocial and spiritual coping of the patient and family. The unit and nursing staff also provide an environment which is conducive to healing and/or death with dignity. Palliative care on this unit is interdisciplinary in nature and aims to relieve suffering and to improve quality of life for those patients with advanced illness as well as to improve the quality of life for their families.

Treatments and diagnostic tests most often seen on this include but are not limited to:

  • Administration of chemotherapeutic agents, including intensive chemotherapy treatment
  • Administration of biotherapy agents
  • Administration of blood and blood products
  • Nursing care of neutropenic patient
  • Care of patients receiving radioactive material and other radiation therapy (eye brachytherapy, I-131)
  • Imaging that includes: X ray/CT scan/MRI/Bone Scan/Ultrasound/PET-CT
  • EKG/EEG
  • Lab studies
  • Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy
  • Paracentesis
  • Thoracentesis
  • Central Line/ Portacath/ PICC Line Insertion and care
  • Tube Feeding/PEG tube care
  • Administration of TPN
  • Palliative Care
  • Complete Nursing care that includes assessment, problem identification, planning, and implementation of physician orders and evaluation of patient’s response to medical and nursing interventions.

Candidates could also be eligible for shift differential if they work evening, overnight and/or weekends. This team member will have the opportunity for chemo/bio certification.

Job Description

Purpose & Scope:

Across all levels, the registered professional nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of their assigned patients. The RN is also responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel. The position requires knowledge of both department and hospital policies and procedures relevant to the delivery of nursing care. Interpretive skills, frequent interactive and consultative associations, along with management and supervisory skills are inherent in the position. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is through the spoken word. Written, telephone, and manual dexterity skills are required for this position.

Education:

Bachelor's in Nursing Required

Experience:

One year of Nursing/Patient Care in an acute care setting is required

Certification/Licensure:

Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Department of Health Professions required or,

Compact State Licensure in Nursing required

BLS certification required

Registered Nurses on designated units are required to maintain certain certifications. New to practice area nurses or new graduates have 1 year to complete the specialty requirements below.

ACLS: ED, ICU, CVICU, Cardiac Cath Lab, Cardiopulmonary Rehab, Bronch Suite, Interventional Radiology, Radiology Safety Nurses, Step down Units (3A, 3B, 4B), 6A, 6B, 7A, Labor and Delivery, Hemodialysis, Respiratory Therapy, Float pool, GI Unit, and PACU

PALS: PACU: Pediatric Nurses, ED

NRP: NICU, Mother Baby, Labor and Delivery

De-escalation training: BHU, ED

Per policy ACLS or PALS cards stand as showing competence in BLS Skills per American Heart Association Guidelines. If an employee holds current ACLS or PALS certification, this meets the requirement for BLS in their job description. They do not need to also carry a separate BLS certification.
