IT Solution Architect – SAP Plant Maintenance (PM)

Join Lonza's Global IT organization as a Solution Architect, Acquire to Retire (A2R), where you will play a key role in designing and evolving technology solutions that support asset management, plant maintenance, and related business processes across Lonza's global operations. Reporting to the Process Delivery Lead for A2R, you will translate business capabilities and requirements into scalable, secure, compliant, and sustainable solutions aligned with enterprise architecture standards and Lonza's target technology landscape.

As a key architecture partner for Global Process Owners, business stakeholders, and delivery teams, you will provide technical leadership and architectural governance across projects, enhancements, and strategic transformation initiatives. You will work across SAP Plant Maintenance and Enterprise Asset Management (PM/EAM), SAP Service and Asset Manager (SSAM), scheduling, calibration, and related technologies, ensuring solutions support long-term business objectives, operational efficiency, and regulatory requirements.

This is an office-first role. Working together in person supports close, real-time collaboration and team alignment, enabling us to deliver our best work. You will work primarily in the office, with the flexibility to work remotely for 20% of your time (one day per week).

What you will do

• Define, maintain, and evolve solution architectures supporting the Acquire to Retire (A2R) process landscape.
• Design end-to-end application, integration, data, and technology solutions that align with business requirements, enterprise architecture principles, and target-state technology landscapes.
• Evaluate solution alternatives and recommend optimal architecture approaches considering scalability, maintainability, security, performance, compliance, and long-term business value.
• Develop solution architecture roadmaps that support business strategy, technology modernization, and process transformation objectives.
• Provide architectural leadership for high-impact and complex applications supporting business-critical processes including Plant Maintenance, Calibration, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Quality.
• Assess the efficiency and business impact of end-to-end process designs, including dependencies and implications across connected business processes and technology platforms.
• Review and approve solution designs for projects, enhancements, integrations, and technology changes, ensuring adherence to architecture standards and design principles.
• Identify and mitigate architecture risks, integration challenges, and technical debt while supporting sustainable technology lifecycle decisions.
• Provide architecture governance for complex solutions within regulated environments, ensuring alignment with GxP requirements and Computer System Validation practices.
• Partner with Global Process Owners and business leaders to translate strategic priorities and business capabilities into technology solutions and architecture roadmaps.
• Act as a subject matter expert for SAP PM/EAM and SAP Service and Asset Manager (SSAM), advising stakeholders on relevant SAP ECC and S/4HANA capabilities and their impact on business processes.
• Collaborate with business teams to understand processes and operational challenges, providing thought leadership on how SAP solutions and industry best practices can support business transformation.
• Drive the adoption of SAP best practices, standardized solutions, and modern technology capabilities across the A2R landscape.
• Lead the design of integrated solutions within the SAP landscape, including SAP S/4HANA, SAP Fiori, SAP Business Technology Platform, mobile technologies, and related enterprise applications.
• Define and maintain solution architecture artifacts, process flows, functional specifications, interface requirements, and supporting design documentation.
• Lead architecture activities throughout project and enhancement lifecycles, supporting estimation, planning, design reviews, implementation, deployment, and transition into operations.
• Work closely with Quality and Validation teams to establish appropriate validation approaches for regulated solutions and support Validation Master Plan activities where required.
• Apply knowledge of Computer System Validation and GxP processes, including IQ, OQ, and PQ, to architecture and solution design decisions.
• Resolve complex technical, integration, and cross-functional architecture issues across the A2R ecosystem.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and architecture patterns and recommend adoption where they can deliver measurable business and technology value.
• Provide architectural direction to external service providers, implementation partners, and solution vendors.
• Review partner deliverables to ensure alignment with architecture standards, regulatory requirements, quality expectations, and target-state designs.
• Support technology selection and vendor evaluation activities and influence external partners to achieve desired architectural outcomes.
• Leverage internal and external technology knowledge to benchmark solution designs and identify opportunities to continuously improve architecture practices.

What we are looking for

• At least 10 years of experience designing, implementing, and evolving SAP solutions within SAP ECC and/or SAP S/4HANA environments, with significant experience in SAP Plant Maintenance / Enterprise Asset Management (PM/EAM).
• Strong experience with SAP Service and Asset Manager (SSAM) and mobile maintenance solutions.
• Deep understanding of asset management, plant maintenance, maintenance execution, and associated end-to-end business processes.
• Hands-on experience across key SAP PM/EAM capabilities, including: Equipment Functional Locations Notifications Work Orders Preventive Maintenance Plans Asset Hierarchies SAP S/4HANA Asset Management Fiori Apps for Maintenance SAP S/4HANA Asset Management for Resource Scheduling (RSH) Mobile Maintenance Solutions
• Strong understanding of integration between SAP PM/EAM and other SAP modules, including Materials Management (MM), Asset Accounting, Project Systems (PS), Production Planning (PP), and Environment, Health and Safety (EHS).
• Knowledge of SAP Fiori, SAP Business Technology Platform, and other modern SAP technologies supporting asset and maintenance management.
• Strong background in SAP configuration, solution enhancement, troubleshooting, and application lifecycle management.
• Experience designing end-to-end SAP solutions and integrations that enable seamless data flow and sustainable business processes.
• Proven ability to analyze complex business processes and requirements and translate them into scalable, practical, and sustainable technology solutions.
• Experience leading solution architecture and design governance across complex projects, enhancements, and transformation initiatives.
• Strong understanding of enterprise architecture principles, architecture governance, security, integration, and target-state technology landscapes.
• Experience working with business-critical applications supporting Manufacturing, Plant Maintenance, Calibration, Supply Chain, and Quality processes.
• Knowledge of Computer System Validation (CSV), GxP processes, and validation lifecycle activities within regulated environments, including IQ, OQ, and PQ.
• Experience collaborating with Quality and Validation teams in pharmaceutical, life sciences, or other regulated environments is advantageous.
• Strong experience providing architectural direction to implementation partners, technology vendors, and external service providers.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to assess complex technical and business dependencies.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with Global Process Owners, business stakeholders, technology teams, Quality functions, and external partners in a global environment.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver effectively within a fast-paced, complex environment.
• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Business Information Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience.
• Occasional travel may be required based on project or business needs.
