Job Title: Fractional CMO — Turning Marketing Strategy Into Measurable Growth

Location: Remote (AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, PA, TX, VA, or WA only)
    Department: Executive Leadership
    Employment Type: Full-Time, W-2
    Compensation: $110,000 Base + Performance Compensation | $182,000+ On-Target Earnings

    Please Read Before Applying

This role requires direct, hands-on experience as a Chief Marketing Officer — not a Director of Marketing, VP of Marketing, or Head of Marketing role with CMO-adjacent duties. You should have held the actual CMO title, with full ownership of marketing strategy, budget, and results, reporting directly to a CEO, owner, or ownership group.

Just as important: this experience needs to have been earned working directly with small to mid-sized business owners — not inside a large corporate marketing department, a big-name agency serving enterprise clients, or a venture-backed company with a board and multiple layers of executive leadership between you and the person who owns the business.

Have you been the CMO — the actual senior-most marketing executive — for a company or companies in the $5M–$30M+ revenue range, working hands-on with the owner or founder? Keep reading.

Has your CMO experience been almost entirely at large, enterprise-scale, or venture-backed companies with $100M+ budgets, hundreds of employees, or multiple layers of executive leadership? This role depends on small-business instincts, not enterprise playbooks — likely not the right fit.

Has your title been Director of Marketing, VP of Marketing, Head of Marketing, or similar — even with real responsibility — rather than CMO? We need someone who has already operated at the full CMO level, not someone ready to step into it for the first time.

Is your interest in small businesses more theoretical than lived — you'd be excited to try it, but haven't actually built your career around it? This role is for someone who already loves this work, not someone testing it out.

This is a U.S.-based position. Applicants must currently reside in one of the states listed above and be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. We're unable to consider candidates residing outside the U.S.

    About the Role

At HTM, our CMOs help law firm owners build brands that attract clients, generate leads predictably, and grow with intention. You'll operate much like a CMO does for any single client — setting strategy, building systems, coaching teams, driving measurable ROI — but within a structured portfolio model, serving as the marketing partner to a portfolio of growing law firms.

This is a full-time W-2 executive position, not a 1099 consulting gig or independent fractional practice. HTM provides the clients, systems, and infrastructure so you can focus entirely on helping owners grow smarter. No legal industry experience required — we'll teach you what you need to know, including relevant advertising and bar-compliance rules.

Why This Beats Running Your Own Practice

If you've built, or considered building, an independent fractional CMO practice, you know the tradeoff: the strategic work is rewarding, but finding clients and running your own back office eats into the work you actually want to do. At HTM, we remove that burden — no business development, since we bring you a full portfolio; predictable income plus performance upside instead of feast-or-famine; and full benefits, systems, and support staff already in place. We're also an Inc. 5000 Fastest-Growing Company every year since 2013.

    About HTM

How To MANAGE a Small Law Firm is the nation's leading provider of Fractional C-Suite services for solo and small law firms. Our clients don't need another agency — they need a marketing leader who helps them build a brand, a pipeline, and a system that scales.

    What You'll Own

Brand Strategy and Positioning — Define, refine, and elevate each firm's brand to drive recognition and trust.
Marketing Execution — Build high-performing campaigns, optimize digital and traditional channels, and implement scalable systems.
Performance and Metrics — Use KPIs and analytics to measure results, optimize campaigns, and guide decision-making.
Coaching and Advisory — Mentor owners and internal marketing teams to improve skills, process, and accountability.

    What You Bring

Direct experience holding the title of Chief Marketing Officer — not a marketing leadership role one level below it.
A demonstrated career built around small to mid-sized businesses in the $5M–$30M+ revenue range — not occasional SMB exposure inside an otherwise enterprise-focused career.
A track record of working hands-on with business owners — reporting directly to founders, owners, or a small ownership group, not through layers of corporate hierarchy.
Data-driven, with a proven ability to translate marketing analytics into actionable strategy.
Genuine enthusiasm for small-business marketing — this should read as a calling, not a pivot.
Comfortable with hands-on execution and implementing compliant, scalable workflows.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional leadership experience.

    Compensation and Benefits

$110,000 base plus performance compensation ($182,000+ on-target earnings). Medical, dental, and vision (75% employer-paid), plus company-paid short- and long-term disability. 401(k) with company match. Unlimited PTO, a paid Thanksgiving-week shutdown, and one additional mandatory paid week off. EAP, pet insurance, legal insurance, and professional/executive leadership development. 100% remote.

    Apply Today

Become the marketing leader growing law firms rely on to build their brand, generate leads, and scale successfully — with a team, systems, and pipeline already built around you.
