Draftsman - Structural Engineering Background

About the Job:

We’re looking for a detail-oriented and resourceful Structural Draftsman (CAD Specialist) to join our team! In this role, you’ll transform architectural concepts, structural requirements, client specifications, and engineering designs into accurate, construction-ready drawings. You’ll work closely with architects, structural engineers, designers, and project managers on residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects, supporting structural drafting, technical documentation, and design-related requirements.

The ideal candidate has strong AutoCAD skills, hands-on drafting experience, and a background in structural engineering or structural design. This is primarily a drafting-focused role that requires the ability to understand and apply structural concepts, engineering requirements, and basic calculations when preparing and reviewing technical drawings.

What You'll Do

• Review and interpret architectural plans, structural plans, engineering designs, client requirements, and technical specifications.
• Prepare detailed and accurate 2D CAD drawings, floor plans, elevations, sections, structural layouts, details, and construction documents.
• Develop and revise architectural and structural drawings based on approved designs, engineering requirements, project specifications, and client requirements.
• Apply knowledge of structural systems, construction methods, building materials, dimensions, and structural components to ensure drawings are technically accurate and feasible for construction.
• Interpret structural design concepts and engineering requirements and translate them into clear and accurate CAD drawings.
• Support the preparation and modification of structural details, including foundations, beams, columns, slabs, framing, and other structural components as required by the project.
• Assist with basic structural calculations and design checks as required, following approved engineering criteria, project specifications, and guidance from the responsible engineer.
• Interpret and apply structural calculations and engineering inputs when preparing or revising drawings to ensure the drawings accurately reflect the approved design.
• Perform basic calculations related to dimensions, quantities, loads, materials, and structural components as applicable to assigned drafting and design tasks.
• Review drawings for dimensional accuracy, consistency, constructability, and compliance with project requirements, applicable building codes, and industry standards.
• Identify and resolve discrepancies, design conflicts, or technical issues between architectural drawings, structural drawings, calculations, and project documentation.
• Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, designers, and project managers to clarify technical requirements and ensure drawings accurately reflect approved designs.
• Utilize AutoCAD to create, revise, and update architectural and structural drawings.
• Use Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook) to manage project documentation, schedules, reports, and communications.
• Maintain organized project files and documentation while managing multiple projects, revisions, and deadlines.
• Support continuous improvement initiatives related to drafting standards, technical documentation, and project coordination workflows.

What You'll Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Architecture, Drafting, or a related field.
• 1–3 years of relevant experience in structural drafting, structural design, engineering support, architectural drafting, or a similar construction-related environment.
• Hands-on experience with structural drafting and a working understanding of structural design principles.
• Ability to read, interpret, and translate structural plans, engineering drawings, calculations, and technical specifications into accurate CAD drawings.
• Working knowledge of basic structural calculations and structural design principles, with the ability to interpret and apply engineering calculations to technical drawings.
• Basic understanding of structural systems, building materials, construction methods, and structural components, including foundations, beams, columns, slabs, and framing.
• Experience assisting with structural calculations, design checks, or engineering design tasks is preferred.
• Proficient in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
• Strong analytical, mathematical, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy across technical drawings, calculations, and project documentation.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to understand and communicate technical information clearly.
• Highly resourceful and able to work independently while knowing when to seek clarification from engineers, architects, or project managers.
• Able to manage multiple projects, revisions, and deadlines in a fast-paced design environment.
• A natural problem-solver with a “puzzle-solver” mindset and the ability to identify inconsistencies and determine practical solutions.
